Every crypto payment has costs: the SnapEX Pay service fee and the cost of moving coins on the network. With SnapEX Pay you decide, invoice by invoice, whether you absorb them or add them on top of the price. One field controls it: fee_on.
What is in the fee
- Service fee: 1% of the invoice amount.
- Network allowance: a fixed amount that depends on the coin and network the customer picks. It covers the cost of the transfer on the blockchain.
fee_on: merchant (the default)
The customer pays exactly the invoice amount. The fees come out of what you receive.
The example from the API documentation: an invoice for 15.00 USD with fee_on set to merchant, paid in USDT on TRON. The customer pays charge_usd = 15.00, and you receive credit_usd = 13.85.
Choose this when the price on your site must be the final price: subscriptions, hosting plans, fixed-price goods.
fee_on: customer
You receive the full invoice amount (credit_usd = the amount). The customer pays the amount plus the service fee and the network allowance (charge_usd is higher than the amount).
Choose this when your margins are thin or when paying in crypto is an extra option next to cards, and you want the customer to cover its cost.
How to set it
In the API, pass the field when you create the invoice:
{
"amount_usd": "15.00",
"fee_on": "customer",
"external_id": "order-15"
}
If you leave it out, it is merchant. In most ready-made modules the same choice is a setting called "Network fee paid by" (or "Client pays the network fee" in BILLmanager).
Where to see the numbers
Every invoice returns charge_usd (what the customer is charged) and credit_usd (what you receive). The same fields come in the webhooks, so your system always knows both amounts.
Small invoices
The network allowance is fixed, so on a very small invoice it would eat a large share of the amount. To prevent that, a network is offered on the payment page only while its allowance stays within a set share of the invoice. On small amounts some networks are therefore not shown.
